Handmade Charlotte & Heather Ross Weekend Sewing
In September I spent a weekend sewing a few quick projects with Heather Ross & Friends in NYC. My dear friend Leanne and I spent Friday shopping around the Garment District near our hotel, Affinia Manhattan, before our nighttime private shopping event at Purl Soho and tapas around the corner. Stops included a jewelry shop, M&J Trimmings, Marimekko (lunch in Eataly with a friend from college), Mood Fabrics (beverage break) and a curiously wonderful customized zipper shop.
Saturday was the major sewing event. We started sometime around 9/9:30 and Heather showed the group how to make a kimono-inspired shrug. It looked lovely in a graphic silk print. The rest of us got down to varying states of business. My business was sewing two Lazy Days skirts from Marimekko prints and velvet ribbon. Easy, Done and Done! Mid-afternoon Leanne and I conquered some cushion covers. Should’ve taken a picture. Dang. Rachel was cracking us up with wacky dancing and knocking out sparkly projects for all of her favorite people. She’s a generous and caring soul – I don’t detect any competitive artifice with her, unless of course, you’re playing tennis.
Around 6 PM Melanie Fallik came to show us all of the latest books from her publishing company, STC Craft. The highlights are Heather’s book Prints, and a few knitting books that look super cute. Melanie shared her advice for getting started with a publisher. That evening we all readied ourselves for Heather’s rooftop book party in the financial district where some ladies met Amy Sedaris.
Sunday was a slower to come together. Heather talked us through project #2 which is a full length apron that features some of the antique trims and fabrics from Jem Fabric Warehouse (our workshop hosts). I decided to do this in a blue ikat print. It was pricey, but sometimes you just have to surrender to the moment, right? I almost finished my apron before closing down. The rest of the group went out for sandwiches and I beelined it for Matt Bernson and picked up a glam pair of shoes to dress up my school pick-up attire.
Most of the ladies in attendance have crafty businesses you should investigate: Heather Ross, Rachel Faucett, Annabel Wrigley and Alessandra Gutierrez, Sarah Watts, Sarah Beth Lodato, Leanne Cohen, Katy Tanis (our other roommate), Ashley Rush. I’m missing a few names in there because I didn’t get their website information. Ladies if you’re reading – please leave your info. M’kay-thanks.
More photos on Flickr. Sorry about the lighting, it was a mixed bag of fluorescence.
